In modern times, their role in medical research is frequently cited; experiments on animals have led to breakthroughs in vaccinations, organ transplantation, and treatments for diseases such as cancer and diabetes. Furthermore, livestock farming remains a primary source of protein for billions worldwide, and animal products like wool and leather continue to be economically significant industries. From this viewpoint, a balanced use of animal resources, particularly when managed responsibly, is seen as a practical necessity. Conversely, those who argue against the exploitation of animals raise profound ethical concerns. They posit that animals are sentient beings capable of experiencing pain, fear, and distress, and therefore possess inherent rights that humans are bound to respect. Practices such as factory farming, which often involve confining animals in cramped and unsanitary conditions, are highlighted as particularly cruel and unnecessary. Similarly, the use of animals for cosmetic testing or entertainment in circuses and zoos where their natural behaviours are severely restricted is increasingly condemned. Advocates for animal welfare argue that as human societies develop, we should strive to mitigate animal suffering and seek out ethical alternatives, such as in-vitro testing or plant-based diets. In my view, while some historical and contemporary uses of animals have undeniably served critical human needs, a re-evaluation of our relationship with them is urgently required. It is difficult to completely dismiss the benefits animals have provided, especially in life-saving medical research. However, this does not grant humans carte blanche to inflict unnecessary suffering. Our moral compass should guide us towards minimising harm, ensuring humane treatment for animals used for food or other purposes, and vigorously pursuing and adopting alternatives wherever possible. The pursuit of scientific advancement or economic gain should not come at the cost of extreme animal suffering. In conclusion, the debate over using animals for human benefit versus exploiting them is complex, with valid arguments on both sides. While acknowledging the historical and practical roles animals have played, I believe that humanity has a moral imperative to treat all creatures with respect, reduce their suffering, and increasingly opt for cruelty-free and sustainable alternatives.
