Task 2 Writing: Model Essay & Practice

Task 2379 WordsBand 8.0+

It is undeniable that public figures, particularly those in media and sports, capture the attention and admiration of young people across the globe. While some celebrities serve as inspiring role models, the increasing tendency for youth to idolise stars despite their questionable conduct is, in my opinion, largely a negative development. This essay will elaborate on how such adoration can lead to skewed values and potentially detrimental behaviours among impressionable young individuals. Firstly, the glorification of media and sports personalities who display problematic attitudes or engage in illicit activities can profoundly influence young adherents. When young people see their heroes involved in scandals related to drug abuse, legal issues, or excessive materialism, they may consciously or unconsciously perceive these actions as acceptable, or even as part of a glamorous lifestyle. For instance, a sports star facing charges for assault might still be celebrated for their athletic prowess, inadvertently sending a message that moral rectitude is secondary to achievement. Consequently, this can normalise undesirable behaviours and erode the importance of ethical conduct in the minds of developing adolescents. Furthermore, this phenomenon fosters a superficial worldview among the youth, where appearance and immediate gratification often supersede diligence and integrity. Many celebrities are famed for their physical attractiveness, wealth, or extravagant lifestyles rather than for profound contributions or genuine virtues. Young admirers might thus become preoccupied with external validation, focusing on attaining similar superficial attributes rather than cultivating personal growth, academic excellence, or strong character. This can lead to unrealistic aspirations, body image issues, and a consumerist mindset, driven by the desire to emulate the outward trappings of celebrity success without appreciating the underlying effort or, indeed, the potential hollowness of such a life. The constant exposure to carefully curated public images exacerbates this issue. In conclusion, while the magnetic appeal of media and sports stars is understandable, the current trend of young people admiring figures who do not embody exemplary conduct poses significant concerns. This development is primarily negative as it risks normalising improper behaviour and propagating a distorted sense of values and priorities among the younger generation. It is crucial for parents, educators, and society at large to guide young individuals towards a more discerning appreciation of role models, emphasising character and positive contributions over transient fame or superficial allure.
