Cambridge IELTS 17 Test 2 Task 2 Writing: Model Essay & Practice

Task 2321 WordsBand 8.0+

The ubiquitous presence of smartphones in modern life has led to a noticeable phenomenon: a growing number of youngsters are engrossed in these devices for extended periods daily. There are several compelling reasons behind this extensive usage, and I firmly believe that, on balance, it represents a largely negative development. Primarily, children spend hours on smartphones due to the immense entertainment and engagement they offer. These devices provide an endless stream of games, educational apps, and video content, often meticulously designed to capture and hold a child's attention with bright colours, interactive features, and instant gratification. Furthermore, smartphones have become a convenient tool for many busy parents. They serve as a 'digital babysitter,' capable of keeping children quiet and occupied during chores, travel, or social engagements, allowing adults to focus on other tasks. This parental reliance, coupled with the allure of digital content, creates a cycle where children increasingly turn to their devices. Despite the perceived convenience and occasional educational benefits, I contend that this pervasive trend poses significant detrimental consequences for children's overall development. Physically, prolonged screen time often contributes to a sedentary lifestyle, increasing the risk of childhood obesity and related health issues. It also leads to eye strain, poor posture, and disrupted sleep patterns due to exposure to blue light before bedtime. From a mental and social perspective, excessive smartphone use can hinder the development of crucial face-to-face communication skills and critical thinking, as passive consumption replaces active play and imaginative engagement. There is also a risk of diminished attention spans and exposure to inappropriate content or cyberbullying, which can severely impact a child's psychological well-being. In conclusion, the widespread adoption of smartphones by children is largely driven by their inherent entertainment value and parents' need for convenience. However, the associated risks to physical health, cognitive development, and social skills far outweigh any potential advantages, making it an overwhelmingly negative trajectory that requires careful management and parental guidance.
