The three pie charts illustrate the proportion of three potentially unhealthy nutrients – sodium, saturated fat, and added sugar – that an average American consumes across different meals and snacks each day. Overall, dinner consistently accounts for the largest share of sodium and saturated fat intake. In contrast, snacks emerge as the predominant source of added sugar, while breakfast generally contributes the least to the daily consumption of all three nutrients. Regarding sodium and saturated fat, dinner is the primary contributor. For sodium, dinner makes up 43% of the daily intake, followed by lunch at 29%. Breakfast and snacks each constitute a marginal 14%. Similarly, for saturated fat, dinner accounts for the largest proportion at 37%, with lunch trailing at 26%. Snacks contribute a significant 21%, which is noticeably higher than the 16% from breakfast. However, the pattern for added sugar consumption is strikingly different. Snacks are by far the leading source, representing 42% of the daily total. Dinner contributes a lesser share of 23%, and lunch accounts for 19%. As with the other nutrients, breakfast provides the smallest percentage of added sugar intake, at 16%.
